5 Greatest Songs by The Clash

Many consider The Clash one of the most influential punk groups in history. Their rebellious attitudes and political ideology were music to listeners’ ears.

Over a decade, the band composed many high-energy tunes. Some of their greatest songs continue to be in heavy rotation over the radiowaves and on Spotify playlists.

Today, we’ll plunge into the pit to examine five great songs from The Clash.

Let’s mosh!

The Story of Iconic British Punk Rockers, The Clash

The Clash was a British rock band initially composed of Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Keith Levene, and Terry Chimes. However, Levene’s tenure was short, and Topper Headon replaced Chimes behind the drums.

Before coming together in 1976, each member was active in the music scene throughout London. When taking the stage together, they gave audiences energetic live performances full of raw emotion.

They signed with CBS Records in 1977 and released their self-titled debut album shortly after.

The Clash would go on to record a total of six studio albums, two EPs, and two live compilations. Their time in the studio resulted in the creation of more than 30 singles.

Two of their collections, Sandinista and Combat Rock, were their attempt to diversify genres. The process caused internal conflicts, resulting in Mick Jones leaving in 1983. Unfortunately, the disputes continued over the next few years, leading to the group’s disbandment in 1986.

Despite the separation, the group left a lasting impression on the music industry and society. Their involvement in political and social issues drew much attention from those who would’ve otherwise been unaware.

Several members attempted to organize a reunion performance. Sadly, on December 22, 2002, Joe Strummer unexpectedly passed away. It was a few months before their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a comeback was no longer possible.

But, The Clash’s music lives on, and for that, we’re thankful. Here are five songs considered the greatest from this legendary punk band.

Deep Dive: How Did Punk Rock Get Its Name?

#1 London Calling

London Calling is a call to action as it details the potential ways the world could end. Joe Strummer and Mick Jones penned the words. Strummer was a news buff who often had a pessimistic outlook on the world’s future. It’s a view many of us are familiar with in the current social and political climate.

The choppy notes of the introduction and the delivery of the lyrics help communicate a sense of urgency. The song fades into silence with a series of beeps produced on Mick Jones’ guitar. They use Morse code to spell out “SOS.”

Greatest Lyric

The ice age is coming, the sun's zoomin' in
Engines stop running, the wheat is growin' thin
A nuclear error, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning, an’ I, I live by the river

#2 Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Mick Jones wrote and sang lead vocals on Should I Stay or Should I Go in 1981. It became The Clash’s biggest hit and only #1 single in the UK. While several rumors exist about the meaning behind the lyrics, Jones continues to say in interviews that it’s just a song.

One unique thing about this track is that it features both English and Spanish languages. Approximately halfway through, fellow musician Joe Ely jumps in, echoing Jones’ singing in Spanish. When you listen closely, you can pick up on it.

Greatest Lyric

Darling, you got to let me know
Should I stay, or should I go?
If you say that you are mine
I'll be here till the end of time

#3 Rock the Casbah

Rock the Casbah was another hit from The Clash and the second single from their album Combat Rock. It reached #8 in the US and #30 in the UK.

Topper Headon, the band’s drummer, drafted the original lyrics. However, Joe Strummer took the words in a different direction as he didn’t think they were appropriate. By the time they released the song, the group fired Headon and replaced him with Terry Chimes.

This track from The Clash has a funky sound. It’s hard to describe as it pulls elements from disco, reggae, and dance. You get a sense of their desire to experiment and try new things in the studio.

Greatest Lyric

Sharif don't like it
Rocking the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Sharif don't like it
Rocking the Casbah, rock the Casbah

#4 Clampdown

Clampdown was another number written by Strummer and Jones. The swelling guitar at the start sets the stage for this high-energy track. After a few beats, the drums kick in, and it has a head-banging rock sound.

The Clash encourages listeners to want more out of life than being stuck in a dead-end job. Strummer and Jones based the lyrics on the band’s prior experiences, especially from bassist Paul Simonon’s time in a warehouse.

Greatest Lyric

Only a fool would think someone could save you
The men at the factory are old and cunning
You don’t owe nothin’, boy get running!
It’s the best years of your life they want to steal

#5 Straight to Hell

Joe Strummer wrote Straight to Hell for their 1982 album Combat Rock. It combines several genres, including punk and reggae. While listening to the song, you feel like you’re taken on a five-minute trip around the world.

The lyrics communicate the struggles of individuals severely impacted by wars and other global conflicts. It’s a great example of their ability to use words to convey a powerful and vital message.

Greatest Lyric

There ain’t no need for ya
There ain’t no need for ya
Go straight to hell, boys
Go straight to hell, boys
