Hootie & The Blowfish is a band formed by college students Darius Rucker, Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, and Jim “Soni” Sonefeld. They released their debut album, Cracked Rear View, which became the best-selling album in the U.S. and remains one of the top 20 selling records in the U.S. Today, Cracked Rear View remains one of the top 20 selling records in the U.S. and has won Grammys, American Music Awards, and an MTV Music Video Award.
Darius Rucker nicknamed one of his college friends Hootie for his round glasses and puffy cheeks, and the band borrowed the name when they started. Hootie was a temporary label for the group, but they stuck with it when they released a number one album.
Bob Dylan sued Hootie & The Blowfish in 1995 for their song Only Wanna Be With You, which contained lyrics that directly quoted Dylan's Idiot Wind. The band settled the dispute without going to court.
